The Beginning the Sierra Club

The Sierra Club was founded in San Francisco on May 28, 1892 by a group who was interested in creating an alpine club for the Sierra. John Muir was selected as its first president and served in that capacity until his death in 1914. (John Muir Papers, Correspondence)

Sierra Club board of directors recording secretary William Armes reached out to Muir on September 13, 1892. "And a meeting of the Sierra Club without John Muir would be like Hamlet with Hamlet left out!" (John Muir Papers, Armes to Muir 1892)
