After this February 20, 1900 letter from famed editor of The Land of Sunshine Charles Lummis, Muir worked tirelessly to try to protect Calaveras Big Trees from being logged. It had been in private hands since its “discovery” in 1851 and in 1931 (17 years after Muir’s death) it was set aside as a California State Park.
