Harriman Expedition to Alaska

In 1899 John Muir joined the Harriman Expedition consisting of elite scientists, photographers, artists, and naturalists. Leaving from Seattle they explored the coasts of Alaska all the way to Siberia, then returned. Here, Muir sketches St. Matthews Island.

Arrived at Hall Island a mile or two from St. Matthew’s at 6 P.M. and landed a party, then immediately started for St. Matthew’s where another party was landed, care having been taken to record the course."
