William Kent purchased a large forest of Redwoods in Marin County in 1905, then donated the land to the federal government. He insisted it should be named after John Muir. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt set aside Muir Woods National Monument. The Monument became the first established solely by land donated by an individual.
