In 1905, John Muir traveled with his daughters Wanda and Helen to the high deserts of northern Arizona seeking to escape his grief for his wife, Louie Strenzel Muir’s death. Muir found an area of exposed fossil trees and worked with President Theodore Roosevelt to establish Petrified Forest National Monument.
